Updated to add: Macleans Magazine (Canada’s version of Time Magazine) issued the following statement:
On April 6th, 2018, a bus carrying a junior hockey team from the Canadian province of Saskatchewan was hit by a transport truck, killing 15 young men between the ages of 16 and 20 and injuring many others. Today, the Humboldt crash claimed a 16th victim, a young woman who was travelling with the team as a sport’s therapist.
This crash has struck a deep nerve in Canada because we are such a large, spread out country, and the experience of putting your kids on a bus to travel with a team is virtually universal across the entire country. Almost every parent has quelled their worry and placed their kids in the hands of a driver, often for long journeys of great distance. Losing your child this way, in a terrible traffic accident, is a very Canadian fear, but those bus trips are some of the best experiences of a child’s life, so we all take a deep breath and let them go ….
The Humboldt crash has united Canadian parents in sorrow, and more than 100 000 Canadians have responded to a Go Fund Me page to help support the families of the dead and injured. The fund is at $9M and growing, an unprecedented sum for Canada. Look at this picture carefully:
What do you see? I see exuberance. Joy. Vitality. Strength. Life itself.
Canadian SJW journalist Nora Loreto sees race, gender and age. These humans were young, white and male, and she’s not having it.
Loreto is the very epitome of sexist, racist and ageist, and when people responded to her tweet with less than charitable remarks of their own, she doubled down and cloaked herself in victimhood. Outraged citizens have contacted the various publications she writes for, demanding that Loreto be sanctioned and even fired.
Loreto is in full melt-down, accusing anyone who questions her tweet or its timing of being a white supremacist who hates women, and lamenting that her future work life is precarious, at best. This is all rather rich coming from a woman who has happily carried out the same sort of social media witch hunt against others, having one women de-platformed and fired for opposing prostitution.
Loreto is, in all likelihood, a rather ordinary person who has embraced extreme beliefs that have led her to thoughts and ideas that are evil. This is precisely why she, and others of her ilk, are so dangerous. It’s tempting to call Loreto a monster, a deviant, wicked to the core and filled with unfathomable malice, but the problem with that characterization is that it makes her special, and the danger is that she isn’t special at all. Anyone who has embraced Marxist, socialist, feminist ideology shares Loreto’s view, even if they are too cowardly to voice it. Marxism, socialism and feminism are cancerous, poisonous ideologies that engage in precisely the actions they purport to oppose: scratch a feminist, find a misogynist. The same is true for the entire social justice credo – it is Loreto who engages in the most egregious racism, yet she is utterly blind to it.
What Loreto’s tweet implies is that if the bus crash involved a team that was comprised of mostly black boys, and 14 of them were crushed, decapitated and cut to ribbons in a bus crash, no one would care. Her mind goes this way because she would not care. Her tweet implies that if the bus crash involved 14 girls on a ringette trip, no one would care because she wouldn’t care. In actual fact, the death of 14 girls in this manner would be seen as a global tragedy, much like the world views girls kidnapped by Boko Haram, while ignoring the boys who are burned alive. The world cares more about girls and women than it does about men and boys, not less. Not only are her ideas rather despicable, they are also wrong.
If Loreto wants to defeat racism and sexism, she could start by picking up a mirror.
And suddenly, I feel tremendous sympathy for the mirror.
Lots of love,
