Relax, everybody – she’s not naked!
I would never subject you to that without a trigger warning.
I like to drop by the Ralph Retort every day to see what shenanigans the Feminist Crusaders Against All Fun Everywhere At All Times™ have gotten themselves up to. Ralph keeps a close eye on these wingnuts, although given how rabidly they stalk him on Twitter, that doesn’t seem to be a particularly taxing job. Since Ralph is an all growed up adult, he is able to handle his harassers without developing PTSD, reporting them for abuse or threatening to kill them. Weird. I don’t think Ralph understands ‘trauma’, ‘abuse’ or ‘harassment’ – someone should get that guy a dictionary or something.
For those who don’t know, Brianna Wu is a transgender game developer who protests the representation of women as sexual beings in video games by creating games in which women are fantastically proportioned with tiny waists and huge tits because fuck making sense, right*?
Lara Croft is a sexist depiction of women with unrealistic abilities and proportions and men only enjoy playing this game because they hate women and think women are meatsacks with no brains and probably rape women in real life, if they ever leave the basement. According to Wu, taking a page from the equally batshit insane Anita Sarkeesian.
But Wu’s game, Revolution60, is totally not a depiction of women with unrealistic abilities and proportions and actually the game sucks ass, so no one plays it, but theoretically, if men did play the game it would be because it’s just a bit of harmless fun and who seriously thinks video games have anything to do with real life, amirite? The cognitive dissonance would be alarming if it were not so transparent.
Why does Wu have a tantrum and throw her toys out of the pram when it comes to Lara Croft or any other woman character in video games? Because she can’t compete. Her games suck. The only way she can get any traction in an industry with ruthlessly, unapologetically high standards is to make the games about something other than game quality and player enjoyment. She has a corrupt game journalism industry to back her up, but it’s pretty sad, really. Women can and do develop awesome video games, but if the best you can do is Tampon Run or Depression Quest, better start chucking sippy cups out of your playpen and get the grown-ups to pay attention to you, because those shit games ain’t gonna cut it.
So it comes as no surprise that Wu is triumphant about being mentioned in a magazine that ‘objectifies’ and ‘sexualizes’ real women in real life, to protest women being ‘objectified’ and ‘sexualized’ in video games, and appears to have zero awareness of just how fucking stupid that is. Or perhaps she does know, and is using those contradictions to fuel her career as a fame-whore, since her career as a game developer is in the shitter, owing to her crappy game? It’s tempting to think of Wu as too brain-damaged and dumb to be strategically deploying these kinds of conundrums to draw attention to herself and profit from that, but you only have to look at this to realize just how effective, in an economic sense, her strategy is:
That’s a lot of coin to engage in such blatant hypocrisy and double standards.
Maybe I need a Patreon?
In unrelated, but pretty exciting news, the PBS Idea Channel has declared egalitarianism a ‘men’s rights project’. Well, that won’t come as news to anyone who reads this blog regularly, but it’s nice to see the wider culture starting to understand what we do.
You know, I think I may have come up with a little of my own hypocrisy to exploit. I’ve recently been mocking the shit out of women who act in a particular way, but now that I think about, I do the same damn thing! Unlike feminists who compare themselves to Godzilla, though, I don’t think hypocrisy is a virtue. I consider it a character flaw that needs to be corrected once identified.
Stay tuned, and I will tell you more about it.
Lots of love,
*stole ‘because fuck making sense‘ from MaidKillua because that’s just an awesome phrase! Thanks, MaidKillua!
