Until yesterday, I had never heard of Childish Gambino, Donald Glover or This Is America, despite the latter racking up more than 1 million views on YouTube in just a few days. That’s Taylor Swift territory in terms of views, and of course I know and adore Nazi Barbie, but Glover? Gambino? Never heard of ‘em.
But then yesterday, snowflakes exploded in tears and screams all over Twitter when a user named LOTI mashed up This is America with Call Me Maybe, to surprisingly good effect! Here’s the mashup – it’s just over a minute long:
And here’s the original.
The original doesn’t do much for me, besides hitting the 120 BPM standard of bubblegum pop, which is why it worked with Call With Maybe so well, but I can appreciate that it seemed deep and compelling to lots of people. The zombie dance moves work better with Jepson, if you ask me, but I’m no dance coach.
LOTI put together the mashup for sniggers – he just thought it was funny – the essence of the shitpost.
This is the same ethos that drove Dankula to teach his girlfriend’s pug to get excited about gassing Jews and Nazi salutes. It’s some immature giggles, and nothing more. A pug who loves Adolph? The juxtaposition is precisely what makes it funny, but not to the joyless shrew brigade on the left. I’ll wait here for a second for my haters to formulate some reason why “sniggers” is racist. Take your time. I don’t want to be “niggardly” with my indulgences. That would be a real “chink” in my armor.
Cathedral media hasn’t picked up the story yet, although some periphery outlets have covered it, mostly virtue signalling their dismay and outrage, but viewers themselves seem pretty chill with the mashup, which has broken 2M views and counting.
I find this interesting because I’ll take myself as an average middle class white lady who thinks like lots of average middle class white ladies and I found the mashup at best funny and at worst meh, who cares? As much as the media wants us all to fight and squabble, I am feeling a unification happening at the level of culture: beginning with Kanye and now Gambino. Trump is delivering the all the win he promised, and even those who find him vulgar and rough have to grudgingly admit he is doing what he said he would do, and America is getting to be great again, for everyone.
Twitter in particular seems rifled with loud, squawking haters, but that was my experience on Twitter, too. The feminists on Twitter are particularly hateful and obscene, as are their followers. Facebook has never been quite so ugly, and average, actual people on the street are nothing like the harridans and shrieking imbeciles on social media.
I do believe the tide is turning now.
Loti is a normal person who is getting kind of sick all the manufactured outrage. He’s another a shitposter, turning laughter into art, and deploying it for war.
Just as it should be.
Change your username to Loki, and that would be perfection, indeed.
Lots of love,
