I have a daughter in high school so my thinking about the recent school shooting in Florida has to make its way through a fog of emotions that don’t lend themselves to sober or clear thinking. I also live in a country with plenty of guns, but they are virtually all long guns, and tightly controlled. My own experience with guns is limited to shooting skeet or targets for the purposes of maintaining bare minimum competence. I find bows and arrows much more to my liking, and they are quite as lethal as I require. I’ve never been a sport archer – I learned to shoot lying on my stomach in tall grass at the edge of a duck pond. It’s the kind of archery that ends with you eating: practical more than principled.
Lars Anderson uses the same general idea in his demonstrations of archery – he uses natural aim and doesn’t worry about sport form. The arrow just has to land where you want it to land. Proper form is irrelevant. This is how I learned to hunt. This is a very ancient form of archery that focused on efficacy far more than perfect aim. Just hit the damn target.
It’s fundamentally about fighting, killing and winning. If you are shooting at an animal, you want to take it out with minimal suffering and eat it. If you are shooting at a human, you want to disable his ability to shoot you. Whether that kills or maims is dependent on lots of different factors. My point is that my personal experience with weapons is focused on killing – in my case, animals.
Guns in Canada are used for killing animals, and that is how we think about them, as a culture. The only legal reason a private citizen can own a gun is to kill animals or shoot targets. Even side arms take on that meaning: a conservation officer with a sidearm is in grizzly or polar bear territory, not hunting poachers. Police officers will shoot people. Military personnel will shoot people. Everyone else with a gun?
Not so much.
That’s the most profound difference between Canada and the US when it comes to gun culture. Guns, especially handguns, in the US, are tools for killing humans. In the right hands, handguns keep you and your family and those you love, safe. In the wrong hands, you get school shootings. The solution on the left is to take the guns out of everyone’s hands. But that means only criminals have guns, which is exactly the situation we have in Canada. Legal handguns are rare. Mass shootings are also quite rare, and when they do happen, they happen with long guns.
What interests me in this debate is what the US gains from widespread gun ownership focused on killing humans. We know what you lose.
What do you gain?
Let’s reframe the question: would the Jews have been better off if they all had guns?
The Second Amendment was written to prevent exactly what happened in WWII in Europe. It really doesn’t matter how many Jews, gays and disabled people you think died during the Holocaust. They were easily rounded up and disposed of precisely because they weren’t armed. The Gypsies were hated by Hitler – let’s be honest, everyone hates the Gypsies – but they are a violent lot, and not so easy to kill. Gypsies will fight back. Hence, the population didn’t take as big a hit as you might expect. Gypsies are wily, and will readily lie about their origins – many Hungarians are really Gypsies, and what a surprise that Hungary is willing to stand up to Soros and his One World Plan? Naturally, Gypsies will stand and fight while tearing the country apart, but that’s kind of what Gypsies do. Destroy what others create.
The Second Amendment prevents someone like George Soros or Hillary Clinton from simply imposing bloody rule on those they oppose. Look at how the left runs Twitter, Google, YouTube and Facebook: lies, censorship, hypocrisy, totalitarian control even to the point of self-destruction. Imagine what they would do without an armed populace that will shoot back? What would America look like if Twitter execs ran the country and no one could fight back?
You don’t have to imagine. Alexander Solzhenitsyn will do it for you.
170 million people died when the left had the power to run the world. But not in America. Europe is back on the road to left wing totalitarianism. Apparently, they just did it wrong last time, and this time, it will work! Super double pinky promise! Give us your guns, and trust us.
The Founding Fathers knew the human heart. Those without ability will tear down those with ability, and call it ‘equality’. Cain destroys Abel, because he can’t be Abel. Salieri destroys Mozart, because he can’t be Mozart. The lazy, foolish, unprincipled and superficial will destroy the ambitious, intelligent, principled and conscientious, because they can’t be them. They can do this, because the lazy, weak and foolish outnumber the industrious, strong and focused.
Only the force of violence prevents the weak from overwhelming the strong.
I went to see the movie Annihilation this weekend. It’s on precisely this topic: an alien life form is combining all DNA on earth into something new. Sometimes this is beautiful: forest creatures with flowering antlers. Mostly it’s terrifying, horrific and lethal. An unsettling movie. Replace “DNA” with “culture” and you have the mission of the left.
The Second Amendment controls the lethal impulses of the left to destroy what it cannot be. The price for that is horrific, but contained within the price is the very reason you have 2A in the first place: there is evil in the world, and that evil is willing to make the innocent pay a blood price. The Second Amendment means that the death toll will always be limited to what a few individuals can wreak.
School shooters will remain in the halls of the school. They cannot spread to take over an entire legislature. They cannot take over nations. They cannot impose their will on entire populations. Take away all private gun ownership in the US, and yes, there will be no school shootings.
It will be so much worse.
Be very careful what you wish for.
Lots of love,
