The Masterpiece Cake case currently in front of SCOTUS is very interesting to me, but not for the reasons you might suspect. I’ve long been a supporter of gay marriage and gay adoption, on the grounds that gay couples offer an evolutionary advantage for orphaned children. It’s one of the very first posts I wrote on this blog! In a nutshell, gay couples have no natural children to prefer over the orphaned children they acquire, so the orphans tend to survive the loss of their biological parents. The tendency to prefer the children mostly closely related to you in emergency situations is called the Cinderella Effect, and it’s very real.
In a house fire, stepchildren tend to die first.
Sad, but true. Gay couples generally don’t have natural children to prefer, so everyone makes it out alive.
I have no objection to gay marriage or gay couples or gay anything. Gay yourself out, I really don’t care.
Two ideas are warring here for me:
- What right does the government have to compel you to say or do things you don’t agree with?
- How are we going to handle Islam under these rules?
I’m of the mind that the cake maker should be able to deny any person he wants, for any reason he wants, but he better not whine and cry when the market punishes him for being a jerk. You want to make “Kill All Cops” cupcakes? Knock yourself out. Expect your client list to hit zero really fast. Offering free fetus cakepops to the local pregnancy abattoir? Again, go for it. It’s your business and your decision, but understand your market and how customers will react.
Then do what you want.
I very much dislike the idea that the government can order a Black carpenter to make a burning cross for the KKK, or a Jewish brickmason to make a replica Auschwitz oven. Why is the Christian baker any different? Let the market decide what the penalty for these artisans should be. Markets are very good at that.
Now what are we going to do? In a city with thousands of Muslims, all as wretchedly radical and violent as their holy writ proclaims they ought to be, what then? This is the fundamental problem with democracy – if a thousand zealots with limited intelligence and no capacity for rational thought all agree to throw gays off the rooftop, do we let the mob rule?
It doesn’t help that the two gay men in the Masterpiece cake case are dickheads. Petty, vindictive, immature little shits who should be forced to eat the cake the baker makes them – hope you like kitty litter and vomit!
Would you eat a cake someone was forced to make you?
Didn’t think that one through very carefully, did you?
A single Christian baker refusing to make a cake for a couple of assholes who happen to be gay is one thing. Hoards of Muslims refusing to serve gays on the grounds of murderous hatred of gays and pretty much everyone and everything that also isn’t Muslim is quite another.
Here is what happens when Steven Crowder requests a cake at a Muslim bakery.
There are fundamental differences between Christianity in America in 2017, and Islam. SCOTUS will have to articulate those differences, one way or another. The Court should begin with the basic, observable undeniable reality of religion on Planet Earth:
THE CHRISTIANS WON!
The Crusades are over, the votes are in, the Nazarenes are the undisputed champions. Don’t think so? Then riddle me this:
What year is it?
Think it through.
Lots of love,
