I don’t know why this kind of stupidity continues to amaze me, but it does.
Jezebel is running a piece talking about how men are now moving into nursing, and typically, they are kicking the ladies asses in terms of salary. Average female nurses earn $51 100 while their male counterparts earn $60 700.
Cue the screaming morons!

I don’t understand. Do employers sit down and look at names and dock pay if they are female? HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? I mean the thought process would have to be right from the start. “Oh, Suzy started today, since she has a vagina, she is therefore not going to do work as well as someone with a penis, therefore she will only make 31.25 an hour instead of 32 an hour.” I mean….how the fuck are employers getting away with this? HELP ME UNDERSTAND. I’m raging all the time about this. It’s like, the most dumb shit EVER to me. I will never understand how this happens or why.
OK, concretewalls, let me explain it to you.
You see, there are different kinds of nursing. They all start out as RNs, and they all have the option to continue their training into highly technical specializations. A certified registered nurse anesthetist (CRNA), for example, requires years of additional training, which is then reflected in salary. CRNA’s easily make $100 000/year and more!
Nurse Practitioners also require several years of additional training, and that certification results in higher earnings, too. Same goes for clinical nurse specialists. More training, more experience, more money.
Guess where male nurses are?
Male nurses make up 9% of the nursing population, and 41% of the CRNA population.
Take a job, pretty much any job, add complex technical specifications that take years to master, advanced training that requires years to complete, increased responsibilities and a correspondingly high salary, and abracadabra! You will begin to attract men.
There is no barrier to women proceeding through the CRNA specialization process and capturing those +$100K/year salaries.
They just don’t.
You will hear it repeated over and over again in the media that there is a wage gap between men and women and that women continue to get paid less than their male counterparts. AND THAT IS TRUE.
Big fucking deal. The real question is why?
Female doctors get paid less than male doctors. Why?
They cluster in family medicine and not pediatric cardiology
They work fewer hours
They take years off to have children
The wage gap exists because men and women make different choices about how much time to dedicate to their jobs and how much more training they are willing to acquire.
It’s the absolute height of hypocrisy for women to demand the right to compete with men head to head in every arena, and then cry like whiny suckholes when the men kick their asses.
That’s not sexism, ladies. That’s life.
It’s what happens when you try to play with the boys.
